- For those of you who haven't heard yet, cable tv providers have begun
- beta testing cable modems for internet access. I have been most
- fortunate in being in an area on Long Island, NY where my cable
- company has offered trial cable net access. It is only available in
- areas that have switched to fibre optics, as far as I know. Don't
- email me for specifics, because I am telling you all I know. I don't
- mean to be rude, unless you have a specific question. I am just trying
- to help this new industry because it is the wave of the future. I will
- be able to access mail (in the near future, as they are sorting out
- the new mail server), usenet, and of course the web, at speeds 15 to
- 25 times faster than a typical 28.8 phone modem. I can get rid of my
- dedicated telephone line for my pc, and that alone should save me $20
- bucks a month. They are a little hazy about the modem rental, they
- will offter rental, and sales. Downloading netscape beta 5 took less
- than 2 1/2 minutes. Web pages fly onto the screen. I realize that
- there is a large financial consideration on the part of the cable
- companies to go ahead and do this. I am still holding onto my PPP
- account, which provides me with my mail address. There have been
- simple glitches which have been fixed by their tech people. THe first
- was that their software wouldn't run on win95. They changed to an
- ethernet card, instead of proprietary, so that the home pc user
- essentially logs onto a network, where you have 24 hour /day access.
- I lurk around occasionally in this (comp.dcom.modems) group, and I see
- constant postings about the problems of phone modems. I realize now
- that the cable modem will probably make the phone modem obsolete. The
- Zenith unit I have works at 500k/second. There are units that work
- much faster. These Zenith modems are very stable, compared to the
- 10meg/second models. Supposedly, 10 meg/second is a little hard for a
- pc's processor. I don't really know how true this is, but that's what
- I was told by one of the cable techies. The idea of not dialing into a
- provider is refreshing. My 14.4 modem would dissonnect whenever it
- felt like it. Sometimes a couple of times in an hour. Sometimes after
- a few minutes. I have read this is caused by line noise, and some
- cheaper modems like mine cannot deal with excessive noise on the line.
- There are studies about cable modem systems in use now on the web.
- http://www.home.net/home2/speed.html is a great place to browse for
- starters.
- Good luck,
- Steve
